The lowdown
The River Kennet is a clear chalk stream running through Berkshire, with the sort of clean, steady water that makes fly presentation and close observation properly worthwhile. Its water meadows, carriers and side streams give the river plenty of character rather than one unchanging channel.
Barton Court is particularly associated with its mayfly hatch, with the strongest sport often arriving in the first weeks of June. The fishery has Victorian-era fishing associations, while the current estate description puts the focus firmly on wild brown trout and fly fishing.

Dalston Beat is a private, secluded River Kennet stretch on Wasing Estate, running from Bailey Bridge to the start of the Rowbarge Pub Garden. It’s syndicate water with weir pools, quick races and swirling eddies — proper varied river fishing.

Tips & reports
Our take (editorial, not club advice): on any decent-sized river, a lead that holds bottom without dragging is half the battle — go up in weight before you go up in bait. A bit of extra colour after rain often brings barbel and bream closer in, but a fast-rising, debris-filled river is dangerous; if in doubt, don't. Weather tools built for still lakes don't translate neatly to rivers, so we haven't bolted a lake-style weather score on here.
