Cookham Reach — Cookham Angling Club
A pleasant, wide and deep Thames stretch at Cookham, with the right bank running upstream from the marina to roughly 400 yards above the railway bridge. Roach and dace are the main named fish, with bream shoals also worth targeting on the feeder.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a proper Thames swim rather than a little intimate brook. The water is described as wide and deep, so bring gear that suits a bigger river.
- The Cookham fishery sits on the right bank. It starts at the marina and runs upstream to approximately 400 yards above the railway bridge.
- Marsh Lane is the handy landmark for access. The water runs both upstream and downstream of the public parking area.
- Parking is available off Marsh Lane, though it can get busy at weekends with swimmers and walkers. Bit of a faff, so bear that in mind.
- The Thames Path and riverside access serve parts of the fishery. Handy for reaching the swims, but check the access on the day and keep things tidy.
- Roach and dace are specifically reported from the stretch. Lovely fish for a bit of float work when conditions are bob on.
- Waggler fishing is a recognised approach here. On a wide, deep river, getting the float working through the right line can be the whole game.
- Pole fishing is also used on the stretch. Look for a steady glide and work out where the flow settles before committing to a line.
- Bream shoals can be targeted with a swimfeeder. Find the depth and keep the feed going sensibly rather than chucking half the bait shop in.
- Night fishing is permitted, giving you another option when the river is quieter. The opposite bank and nearby Bourne End are in Buckinghamshire, while this fishery is beside Cookham in Berkshire.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Float anglers can work the wide, deep water with a waggler or pole, while a swimfeeder is the recognised play for targeting bream shoals. Roach and dace make the float approach especially appealing.
