Lavendon Mill (Downstream)

Lavendon Mill Downstream is a shallower, weedy River Great Ouse section between Olney and Turvey, run by Luton Angling Club. There’s a decent flow for most of the year and a proper mix of barbel, carp, pike and roach to go at.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This water sits below the old Lavendon Mill, with the present weir replacing the original mill structure. The downstream section starts at the lower boundary of the orchard.
  • It’s generally shallower than the club’s other sections, averaging around 4 feet. That makes the flow and weed worth paying attention to when choosing a swim.
  • The river is described as weedy, but it usually carries a good flow for most of the year. A bit of water pushing through should make the stretch interesting.
  • The fishery runs through three fields, and the route crosses two footbridges. Handy enough, though it’s not all flat, easy walking.
  • Some banks are very steep, so take care getting down to the river. Waders are recommended for reaching some of the swims.
  • The club has cut out some swims, giving anglers prepared spots among the more awkward banks and vegetation.
  • Barbel, carp, pike and roach are all named targets here. The downstream water is also known for double-figure barbel.
  • The club reports a barbel over 15lb from this section in 2008, so there’s clearly a proper barbel possibility in the mix.
  • The downstream boundary is a dry ditch. Keep well away from the house and garden, and don’t fish the lawn and orchard below the weir.
  • There’s a locked car park beside the horse paddock, on the left when turning in from the main road. Members may not fish the lawn and orchard area, roughly a quarter of a mile below the weir.

Methods: The checked details name barbel, carp, pike and roach as target species, but don’t specify particular methods. The shallow, weedy character and generally good flow are the main things to factor into your approach.
