We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- There’s a proper mix of river to go at here, rather than one uniform bit of water. The venue runs from above the weir, down through the faster water, and along the meandering river to the end of the fishery.
- Above the weir, expect slower, deeper water. One bank has good bankside cover too, so there’s plenty to investigate around the margins and any neater-looking holes.
- Below the weir, the flow picks up. That faster water should offer a different game altogether, with the crease and glides worth a close look when conditions have a bit of colour in them.
- The backwater is usually the winter banker. It holds more water then, making it a handy change of swim when the main river is pushing through or the weather turns properly grim.
- There’s a strong coarse-fish line-up, including barbel, roach, chub, pike and perch. Double-figure carp are present above the weir as well, so don’t assume it’s all about the river’s quicker stuff.
- Barbel are a big part of the venue’s reputation. MKAA records a 20 lb 6 oz fish from Adams Mill, while an 8 lb 2 oz chub has also been recorded here.
- Trotting, feeder work and careful margin fishing all look relevant to the different habitats. Above the weir may suit a more patient approach, while the faster water below gives you something to explore when fish are on the move.
- Winter is a key time for the backwater, while the main river offers contrasting water through the rest of the season. Keep mobile, read the flow and don’t overlook cover.
- Numbers are tightly managed: 12 anglers maximum on the main river and three on the backwater, with 15 anglers the absolute maximum on the water or property.
Methods: Match the approach to the water in front of you: trotting and feeder tactics for the river, with patient margin work around the slower, deeper sections. The backwater is the obvious winter option when it carries more water.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
