Little Paxton (SDAA), River Great Ouse

Little Paxton is a cracking SDAA stretch on the Great Ouse, with roughly two miles of bank to explore. There’s a navigable arm, a big weir pool packed with options, and wider water downstream where the two arms join back up.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The upstream end is known as Lammas Meadow, and it’s noted for shoals of bream. A proper area to have in mind if you fancy targeting silver fish.
  • The river splits into two arms here. One is the navigable arm, holding a good head of normal river species and offering classic running-water swims.
  • The other arm runs through a large weir pool. This is the busy bit in terms of fish variety, with a wide mix of species showing up.
  • Barbel are present to double figures, while chub run to about 6lb or more. Feeder work or a well-presented bait around the flow changes could be the ticket.
  • There are zander reported to 10lb or more and pike to 20lb or more. That makes the weir-pool area a proper predator option as well as a coarse venue.
  • Bream can reach about 8lb or more, and eels are present in good numbers. The Lammas Meadow shoals sound well worth a look when the bream are on the munch.
  • Occasional river carp of around 20lb or more are reported. They’re not the whole story here, but a cheeky bonus is certainly possible.
  • The weir-pool swims are popular partly because they’re close to the car park, so there’s less faff shifting kit. Downstream, the two arms rejoin and the river becomes wider.
  • Those downstream swims have varying depths, so there’s plenty to work out on the day. A bit of observation should help you pick between the crease, deeper water and steadier edges.
  • SDAA controls the fishing rights, with access through its club ticket. Standard membership does not include a night permit, and Little Paxton isn’t listed among the waters requiring one.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: There’s scope for feeder or float work on the navigable arm and around the wider downstream water, with predator tactics available in the weir pool. Keep an eye on the varying depths and flow before settling into a swim.
