Stanground Backwater
Stanground Backwater is a proper mixed-fishery pleasure venue on the River Nene, run by Peterborough & District Angling Association. It’s a handy backwater option for bream and specimen pike, with simple feeder fishing very much on the cards.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a backwater rather than a straight, main-river section, so it has a different feel from the open Nene. A quieter-looking venue for a relaxed session.
- The lower end is accessed from Belton Road, with Stanground Lock also listed as an access point. The lock sits where the Nene meets the Middle Level Navigations.
- Parking is available at Belton Road and Stanground Lock, but anglers are asked to park responsibly. Worth keeping things tidy and considerate.
- The venue is described as a simple pleasure-fishing water. No faff needed — it’s aimed squarely at general pleasure anglers.
- Feeder fishing is specifically suited here. A straightforward feeder approach is a sensible starting point, especially when you’re looking for bream.
- Bream can show well late in the season, when the backwater tends to hold plenty of them. They also gather here during spawning periods.
- There’s a pike angle too. The water is noted for specimen pike, so it’s not just a sit-behind-the-feeder sort of place.
- The backwater character and nearby lock area give the venue a clear connection with the wider Nene and Middle Level waterway system.
- P&DAA controls around 12 miles of the River Nene and associated waters. Stanground Backwater is one of its listed backwater venues.
- Standard River Nene fishing runs from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. There’s no night fishing under standard P&DAA membership.
Methods: Keep it simple with feeder tactics for bream and general pleasure fishing. Pike anglers can target the venue’s specimen fish, while keeping within the association’s rules and permitted fishing hours.
