The lowdown

  • This is Beat 1 — the Village Beat — and it’s the only BODSAA section open to visitors.
  • The fishing runs along the right bank, with a footpath beside the full length of the beat. Handy for a proper recce before picking a swim.
  • Expect a mix of quick water, deep pools and softer stretches. Trout and grayling show in the faster runs and pool tails.
  • The Church Pool and Plumley’s are the ones to look at when the river is low. Nice spots for keeping things tidy and accurate.
  • When there’s more water pushing through, Duke’s, Mud Flats and Cadbury’s come into their own. A bit of colour and extra flow can really wake the place up.
  • Salmon can be taken throughout the beat, while the coarse side includes dace, chub, barbel, pike and large perch.
  • Banks are mostly high clay, so take care around the deeper holes and cuts. Some gravel-bottomed pools are much easier under the wading boots.
  • There’s a good circular walk from the village above the bridge to Graig Island and back via Craig Lane, useful for covering the water without a load of faff.
  • Watch for livestock in the meadows and overhead cables at Pylons Pool. Parking is available at the Royal Oak and on village streets, with informal parking near the Graig subject to local conditions.

Methods: The beat suits both fly and spinner fishing for the game fish, with trout and grayling worth targeting in the runs and pool tails. Coarse anglers have dace, chub, barbel, pike and large perch to go at, depending on conditions.

Key rules

  • An Environment Agency rod licence is required.
  • Non-member day tickets are for Beat 1 right bank only.
  • Anglers fish BODSAA water at their own risk.
  • Brown-trout fishing is fly only, using barbless or de-barbed hooks.
  • Game anglers fishing a pool or run for 20 minutes or more must give way when requested.
  • Wading anglers should fish downstream without undue delay and leave a 30-metre gap for the following angler.
  • All fish must be safely returned except invasive species requiring removal.
  • Visitors must show their day ticket to a BODSAA bailiff or full member when asked.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
