Bathers Beat, Llangollen Maelor Angling

Bathers Beat is a cracking 1.8-mile slice of the River Dee, running from Bont Bridge to 300 metres below the railway viaduct. Both banks are fishable, with proper variety: trout, grayling, salmon, sea trout and some useful coarse-fish water.

The lowdown

  • The run below Bont Bridge is good fly water for all species. A tidy place to start if you fancy working the flow and picking apart the crease.
  • From the run up to the aqueduct, the water is noted for trout and grayling. Expect classic river water rather than a stillwater plod.
  • Below the bridge there’s a deep, fast run with salmon in mind. A bit of pace and a bit of colour should make it worth a look.
  • Llyn Llewelyn is one of the biggest pools on the Dee and holds a large head of grayling. Spinning is recommended at the head, while the tail is good fly water.
  • Llyn y Boat is another proper pool, offering salmon fishing by both fly and spinning. Handy access is available from Llyn y Boat itself.
  • The Long Meadow is the coarse-fishing corner, with chub that can be tempted on maggot or worm. The tail can also fish well for salmon.
  • The Dyke run is described as excellent salmon fly water. The Three Groynes suit fly fishing too, but are especially rated for spinning.
  • The deep pool below the viaduct is excellent for spinning. The beat finishes 150 metres below the viaduct, so don’t wander past the boundary.
  • Access comes from Bont Bridge, the aqueduct, Llyn Llewelyn, Llyn y Boat, the World Heritage car park, Dolydd Road and Ty Mawr Country Park. The right-bank drive and car park are beneath the aqueduct.

Methods: Fly fishing covers much of the beat, with spinning coming into its own in the Llyn Llewelyn head, Three Groynes and below the viaduct. Maggot and worm are allowed for coarse fishing on the Bathers Beat from 16 June to 1 March.

Key rules

  • An NRW rod licence is required.
  • Carry your membership card or day ticket and show it to an authorised bailiff if requested.
  • Follow Natural Resources Wales rules and regulations.
  • Fishing for trout and grayling is fly only upstream of the Chain Bridge Hotel; the Bathers Beat is downstream of that point.
  • Maggots are allowed on the Bathers Beat for coarse fishing from 16 June to 1 March.
  • No dogs, camping, fires, shooting, canoeing or boat launching without permission.
  • Park considerately, avoid blocking gates, close gates and remove litter.
  • All anglers fish the waters at their own risk.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
