Chirk Beat

Chirk Beat is Wirral Game Fishing Club’s own 900-yard stretch of the River Dee, with five good pools on the right-hand bank. It’s classic, high-water salmon water and proper fly-fishing country, with good grayling too.

The lowdown

  • This is a high-water beat, fishing up to roughly 1.2 metres on the gauge. When the river has a bit of colour and is pushing through, it can really come alive.
  • There are five good pools across the beat, though fish move through rather than sitting tight for long periods. Find one and you may well find another nearby.
  • The Sun Pool back eddy is the cheeky one to keep in mind. It can fish well above 700 on the gauge, and may hold sea trout when the river drops into low water.
  • At the head of the beat, the Donkey Pool is suggested for lower conditions. Worth a look when the bigger flow has eased off.
  • It’s described as ideal fly water and classic salmon water. September and October are highlighted as particularly productive months.
  • Grayling fishing is good, with occasional sea trout and brown trout also present. The beat is very much about reading the water and covering travelling fish.
  • The river bottom is very rough, so a wading staff is an essential aid. A life jacket is also recommended — not a faff here, but sensible kit for a proper high-water beat.
  • Access is via Ty-Maen Farm. Keep to the 5 mph speed limit, park by the bottom gate with room for about three cars, and lock the gate after use.
  • Night fishing is not recommended. Non-fishing companions are allowed, while guests must fish with a full or five-day member and are permitted from 18 October until 31 August.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Fly fishing is the main game here, especially when the Dee is carrying height and colour. Fish the pools and back eddies, keep moving, and pay attention when one fish shows — others may be travelling through the same water.
