The lowdown
- This is private Midland Fly Fishers water, so it’s not a wander-up-and-fish sort of place. Access is through the club’s own arrangements.
- The preserve sits beside the Llangollen Railway, with pasture, woodland and steep valley hillsides making up the backdrop. Proper lovely bit of river.
- The fishing runs from Glyndyfrdwy downstream towards Groeslwyd. Published descriptions put it at roughly 2.5 miles of double-bank fishing.
- Some other club information describes around 3–4 miles of River Dee water, so check the exact current extent when sorting access.
- It’s primarily game-fishing water, with fishing generally based around wading. Expect a lively, fast-flowing upper-valley river rather than a lazy chuck-and-sit swim.
- Wild brown trout are a key draw, while the Dee here is particularly well regarded for grayling. Atlantic salmon are also named among the possible species.
- For approach, think fly fishing first: cover the glides and faster runs carefully, keeping mobile and reading the crease as you wade. The flow and wading-based nature are central to the fishing.
- The river has hosted an international grayling competition, which gives you a fair idea of the stretch’s reputation for grayling.
- Historic information mentions trout and grayling day and season tickets being sold locally. Current 2026 information says day tickets are not being issued, with the club invite-only in practice.
- Before travelling, contact Midland Fly Fishers directly to confirm availability, current rules, access arrangements and any prices. A valid rod licence is required where applicable.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Fly fishing is the main game, with wading-based tactics suited to the quick upper-valley flow. Work the glides, runs and creases carefully for wild brown trout and grayling.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
