My River Watch isn't available here — we haven't matched a level gauge to this stretch, and we won't guess one.
The lowdown
- This is club-owned water on the upper River Dee, right by Llandderfel village and its road bridge.
- The association calls the upper reaches renowned for grayling, so there’s a cracking chance of finding them here. Brown trout are also named on the association waters.
- Migrating salmon and sea trout are present too. Salmon must be released, mind, so handle them carefully and get them straight back.
- Fly fishing is allowed, with nymphs and bugs included in the association’s fly-fishing rules. A neat, mobile approach should suit the river’s upper-water character.
- Worm fishing is permitted on the Llandderfel beat, as is spinner or lure fishing. That gives you a few bob-on options when conditions aren’t ideal for the fly.
- Maggots are prohibited, and ground baiting is banned under the NRW byelaw cited by the association. So leave the bait bucket at home and keep things tidy.
- The association gives roughly 0.3 m as a normal summer level. At 1.0 m or more, the river may be unsuitable and dangerous, so check the NRW gauges before setting off.
- There’s parking by the road bridge at Llandderfel. The official map gives grid reference SH 982366 and postcode LL23 7RA for the area.
- Don’t mix this up with the separate Bala beat. Llandderfel is its own water, with a day-ticket office shown at the Bryntirion Inn.
- No fishing length or peg count is published, so expect a natural river day rather than a numbered-peg session.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Fly fishing with nymphs and bugs, worm fishing, and spinner or lure fishing are permitted on the Llandderfel beat. Maggots and ground baiting are not allowed.

Key rules
- A current association permit must be held while fishing.
- Permits are not transferable.
- An NRW rod licence is required.
- Salmon must be released.
- Brown trout are in season from 3 March to 30 September on association rivers.
- Salmon are in season from 3 March to 17 October.
- River coarse-fish fishing, including grayling, is subject to the 15 March to 15 June close season.
- Maggots and ground baiting are prohibited.
Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
