River Dee – Bangor on Dee (Lymm Angling Club water)

Plan a session

A cracking upper-Dee stretch on the outskirts of Bangor-on-Dee, run by Lymm Angling Club. It’s attractive, mixed coarse and game water, with good chub heads, regular dace and pike, plus the chance of a proper specimen.

The lowdown

  • This is the Lymm Angling Club water near Bangor-on-Dee, not the separate Bangor-on-Dee Village Beat (Beat 1). Worth knowing before you head off.
  • The club describes it as upper River Dee fishing, with a nice mixture of coarse and game-fishing character. So there’s a bit of variety rather than one-trick water.
  • Access is double- and single-banked in different sections, with fishing available on both banks. That should give you options when one side is busy or the flow is pushing awkwardly.
  • The venue holds good heads of chub, while dace and pike are regular names on the water. The club also says the stretch can produce specimen-sized fish.
  • Barbel have reportedly been caught by fly anglers in the area. A cheeky surprise, and a reminder that the Dee can throw up something different when conditions line up.
  • There’s no total length or peg count published, so expect a more natural, exploratory session rather than a numbered-peg job. Find the crease, watch the glides and have a proper look before setting up.
  • Trotting and light feeder work should suit the coarse-water side, especially when there’s a bit of colour and the chub are on the munch. For pike, fish within the club’s rules and handle everything carefully.
  • Parking Point A is on the left bank, reached via Eytonhall Lane and a farm entrance. Parking Point B is on the right bank, via the old Bangor-on-Dee bridge and farm access.
  • Use only the authorised parking areas and designated routes. No key is required, but the access arrangements still matter — don’t faff about with gates, fields or farm access.
  • It’s catch and release, with unhooking mats compulsory. Keep the place tidy, respect the banks and property, and remember the river close season for coarse fish is 15 March to 15 June.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Trotting, feeder fishing and searching the glides for chub and dace look the natural starting points. Pike are regular too, while fly anglers have reportedly found barbel in the area.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
