We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is the River Weaver behind Top Flash, with the published stretch covering Kitchen Meadow and Millfields. The association has been running since 1908 and describes itself as an open angling association in Cheshire.
  • Millfields is approximately 100 yards long. There are no marked pegs, so you’ll need to pick your swim sensibly and keep an eye on the bankside cover.
  • The water is lined with reeds, with plenty of overhanging trees and submerged timbers. Lovely fish-holding stuff, but mind the snags when playing anything decent.
  • Snaggy areas can move after floods, so don’t assume yesterday’s crease or clear spot is still there. Have a proper look before setting up.
  • The remains of Middle Flash sit on the opposite bank through the trees. It gives the place a bit of character and hints at the changing shape of this old Weaver water.
  • Roach, chub, bream and eels are present, with bream reported to 8 lb on the adjoining Kitchen Meadow section. There are also quality perch, plus pike and carp moving between Bottom Flash, Top Flash and the river.
  • Occasional barbel have been caught too. That makes robust tackle and suitable landing gear a sensible shout, especially around the timber and reed edges.
  • Trotting, feeder work and fishing tight to cover should all suit the river’s mixed character. Look for the crease, quieter reed-lined edges and any deeper water tucked beside the snags.
  • The season runs from June 16 to March 14. Night fishing is not allowed, access is not before 6:30am, and anglers must be finished by 10pm at the car park.

Methods: A versatile stretch for trotting, feeder fishing and working baits around the reed edges, overhanging trees and submerged timber. Keep tackle sensible around the snags, particularly if carp, pike or the occasional barbel is the target.

Key rules

  • Fishing is open from June 16 to March 14; the river close season is March 15 to June 15 inclusive.
  • A WDAA permit is required, along with a current Environment Agency rod licence where applicable.
  • Close all gates after passing through.
  • All fish must be returned to the water from which they were caught.
  • Barbless or micro-barbed hooks are required.
  • Up to three rods may be used on the River Weaver, subject to association rules.
  • Bait boats, fires, disposable barbecues, peanuts and lead-core line are prohibited.
  • Use suitable landing nets and appropriate unhooking equipment for carp, pike or barbel.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
