Prebends & Cathedral Waters, River Wear
Prebends & Cathedral Waters is a cracking central-Durham stretch, wrapped around the peninsula beneath Durham Castle and Cathedral. It’s deep, slow and properly picturesque, with steep wooded valley sides and a cracking World Heritage Site backdrop.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The club controls most fishing on both banks around Durham’s peninsula, so this is a proper two-bank bit of river rather than a single tucked-away margin.
- The water sits beneath the castle and cathedral skyline. Hard to beat for scenery while you’re waiting for the float to bury.
- Expect deep, slow water with steep wooded valley sides. A swim-feeder or stick-float approach fits the character nicely.
- The club describes Prebends as picturesque, and it’s easy to see why. This is more about finding the crease, depth and steady lanes than charging about.
- Brown trout, grayling, perch, gudgeon, dace, chub, barbel, salmon and sea trout are all named for the club’s waters here.
- Chub commonly reach 4–5 lb, while the stretch can produce double-figure sea trout. That’s a proper bit of variety in one Durham city venue.
- Winter can see dace, chub and roach showing, with Prebends capable of producing barbel in midwinter. Summer has produced double-figure nets of small barbel.
- Feeder and stick-float methods are described as effective. Groundbaiting with a swim-feeder and loose feeding are allowed from 16 June to 14 March.
- The water is approximately 400 metres from the most convenient upper-bank parking access, so expect a bit of a walk with the kit. Parking in Durham city is difficult during the daytime.
- Sunday is often the best access day because some parking is free. Milburngate, Prince Bishops, County Hall park-and-ride on Saturdays and ticketed parking at Pimlico are all mentioned options.
Methods: Feeder and stick-float work are the main plays. Groundbaiting by swim-feeder and loose feeding are allowed from 16 June to 14 March, subject to the club’s close-season restrictions.
