We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Temple Sowerby on Live River Levels

The lowdown
- This is proper Eden water, run by Penrith Angling Association under an arrangement with Lazonby Estate. The Upper Beat sits between the estate markers A and B.
- The named limits are The Meadows to Chain Rock Tail. No measured mileage is published, so think of it by those marker points rather than a quoted length.
- It’s restricted to association members on Mondays and Thursdays. No public day tickets and no guest tickets are available for the Lazonby Estate water.
- The Upper Water is capped at four rods, so booking ahead is essential. Guiding is strictly prohibited, too.
- Salmon can be targeted with fly or spinning, but every salmon must go back. Worming, maggoting and prawn fishing for salmon are banned.
- Trout fishing is fly-only under the estate rules, covering brown trout and sea trout. You can keep a maximum of two trout per season; anything after that must be released.
- Grayling are also fly-only and are available to members during the trout closed season. That gives the beat a useful winter angle when the trout season is shut.
- Every fish caught on the estate beat must be recorded and reported. Include the date, angler name, weight, pool, remarks and the fly, bait or lure used.
- The Hut Stream fishing hut is unlocked. Other estate huts at Croglin, The Gully and Red Scar can be accessed through Linda Atkinson.
- Access is by estate tracks and lay-bys. Grass tracks can be a faff for cars when wet, so park near the river before the traffic lights in poor conditions and walk in. Keep dogs on leads, take litter home and leave the banks clear.
Methods: Fly fishing is the key approach for trout and grayling, while salmon may be fished for with fly or spinning. Read the flow, cover the likely lies and keep the presentation tidy.
