We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The water is split into an upper beat of roughly 1.5 km and a lower beat of about 2 km. Plenty of river to go at.
  • The upper section is narrower and more intimate, running upstream towards Warcop Bridge. The final few hundred yards are shared with Kirkby Stephen Angling Association.
  • The lower beat finishes at Far Bank End, where a small stream joins from the right. That sort of junction is well worth a careful look.
  • There’s a proper mix of water here. Fast runs for lively fly work, plus slower glides where a longer, more measured approach comes into its own.
  • The upper beat is highly sought after for grayling. Fish over 2 lb, and up to around 3 lb, are reported, so it’s not just small-fish water.
  • The lower beat has produced brown trout over 5 lb. A bit of colour and the right conditions could make this section very interesting.
  • Fly anglers can fish spiders and upstream nymphs. Pick the method to suit the flow rather than forcing one approach all day.
  • Appleby car park is at Blacksyke Bridge, making that a handy starting point for exploring both beats.
  • The scenery is classic Cumbrian stuff, and the river sits within a European Special Area of Conservation and Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Methods: This is fly-fishing water, with spider fishing and upstream nymphing both named methods. Fish the faster runs, but don’t overlook the longer, slower glides.

Key rules

  • Trout season: 15 March to 30 September, inclusive.
  • Grayling season: 16 June to 14 March, inclusive.
  • No spinning is allowed.
  • Maggots, corn, bread and similar baits are prohibited.
  • Catch-and-kill limit is two fish per day, with a 10- to 15-inch size limit.
  • Healthy fish should be returned where possible. Barbless hooks and catch-and-release are recommended.
  • Only one rod may be in use at one time.
  • Carry and produce membership or a fishing ticket when requested. Leave gates as found, use stiles and keep to the water’s edge.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
