Pride of Derby River Derwent — Church Wilne/Great Wilne to the River Trent confluence

A proper historic bit of the Derwent, running from around Church Wilne and Great Wilne down to the River Trent confluence. It’s natural river fishing, with quick shallow water, deeper glides nearby and a cracking mix of chub, barbel and other coarse fish.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is one of The Pride of Derby Angling Association’s principal waters, and it’s been part of the club’s fishing for a very long time.
  • The Derwent is described as entirely natural, with fast shallow runs sitting close to slower, deeper areas. That gives you plenty to have a look at before settling on a swim.
  • Chub are the main event here. Match catches are predominantly chub around 3–5 lb, with winning weights of roughly 40 lb not uncommon.
  • Barbel turn up regularly too, with the club reporting fish of approximately 11–14 lb. Proper river gear is well worth having ready.
  • Roach, perch and bream are also present, giving you other options when the chub aren’t exactly on the munch.
  • The stretch starts around Church Wilne and Great Wilne, runs through the Shardlow side and continues right down to the River Trent confluence.
  • Some opposite-bank fishing rights are included where they’re marked on the season ticket, so check the club maps before wandering across or setting up.
  • There are three access points. Two are near locked car-parking areas, but some sections involve a lengthy walk, so travel light and wear decent boots.
  • At the Wilne Lane end, keep to the left of the fence and stay within 15 ft of the fence and waterside. It’s not suitable throughout for disabled or infirm anglers.
  • The club says pleasure-fishing catches can substantially exceed match weights. That’s a cheeky hint that the quieter swims can be well worth the effort.

Methods: Trotting or feeder work should suit the mix of shallow runs and deeper water, with chub and barbel the obvious targets. Fish the crease and changing depth, then move on if the swim is quiet.

Key rules

  • Use only the designated access routes shown on the club maps.
  • At the Wilne Lane end, access is on the left side of the fence and anglers must remain within 15 ft of the fence and waterside.
  • Fishing from bridges is prohibited.
  • Passing over pipe bridges is prohibited.
  • Keep the banks clean and free of litter.
  • Fires are prohibited, and bait tins must not be taken to the waterside.
  • Baited rods in use must not be left unattended.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
