Norbury Beat — River Dove, Ellastone to Rocester Weir

Plan a session

Norbury Beat is a cracking 3.5–4-mile stretch of clear limestone River Dove, running from around the B5033 bridge near Ellastone down to Rocester Weir. It’s mainly double-bank, fly-only water with wild brown trout and grayling in the pools, glides and riffles.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Mayfield on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is proper small-river fly water, with a lovely mix of wooded banks and more open farmland. The river also forms the Derbyshire–Staffordshire boundary around here, which is a neat bit of local character.
  • The upper limit sits around the B5033 bridge near Ellastone/Norbury, while Rocester Weir marks the lower end. That gives you a decent amount of water to explore rather than a short, poky beat.
  • Expect clear limestone-stream conditions, with pools, glides and riffles all in the mix. Fish can sit in very different spots, so it pays to keep moving and read each swim carefully.
  • Wading is generally possible with reasonable care. Take it steady, especially where the flow quickens through the riffles or the bottom gets awkward. No need to go charging in.
  • Dry-fly fishing is one of the beat’s main draws. When fish are looking up, the clear water and varied flow give you plenty of likely seams to work.
  • Nymphing comes into play when conditions call for it. Cover the deeper pools and steadier glides, then adjust as the river’s pace and clarity dictate.
  • Wild brown trout are present, with grayling too. Brown trout have also been stocked historically, and fish around 40 cm are reported as not uncommon.
  • It’s fly only, so this is not a trotting or feeder job. Barbless hooks are required for the published hosted-fishing arrangements — worth having that sorted before you arrive.
  • Access and parking are controlled by the club and landowners. The beat is primarily members-only, with occasional hosted or charity-auction days offered alongside a club member.
  • We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.

Methods: Fly fishing only. Try dry fly when fish are rising, switching to nymphs through the deeper pools and steadier glides when conditions dictate.
