Old Dove – Marston Bridge / Marston-on-Dove stretch

Plan a session

The Old Dove at Marston Bridge is a popular BMAA stretch with cracking fly-fishing water and plenty of variety. The weir below the bridge and the old railway bridge — the Pillars — give you some proper features to fish around.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Marston on Dove on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This section is known by BMAA as Marston Bridge/Old Dove, around Marston Road Bridge on the River Dove.
  • It forms part of roughly 9 miles of River Dove fishing managed by Burton Mutual Angling Association.
  • Parking is available next to Marston Bridge, with members also able to use the BMAA car park through the gate. You’ll need a key for that one.
  • A weir sits downstream of the bridge, giving the stretch a bit of extra pace and some interesting water to pick apart.
  • Head roughly 500 metres downstream and you’ll find the old railway bridge, known locally as the Pillars.
  • The Pillars are noted for pike, barbel and chub, so it’s a handy spot when you fancy targeting something with a bit more grunt.
  • BMAA describes Dove depths ranging from fast, shallow rapids of around 18 inches to deep pools of about 12 feet. Plenty to go at, then.
  • There are good fly-fishing opportunities here. The varied flow should give fly anglers, trotting fans and feeder anglers different options through the season.
  • The stretch is suitable for all the species BMAA names for its River Dove water, including barbel, chub, bream, roach, carp, perch, pike, trout and grayling.
  • Watch the close-season access rules carefully: no access above or below Marston Road Bridge on either side unless you’re actively fly fishing, and no walking the banks unless you’re fishing.

Methods: Fly fishing is specifically highlighted, while the mix of shallow rapids, glides and deep pools should suit trotting and feeder work too. Around the Pillars, targeting barbel, chub or pike could be the ticket.
