We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Iford Bridge on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is the lower Dorset Stour, running from Iford down to Tuckton near Bournemouth and Christchurch. It’s a varied bit of river rather than one uniform canal-like run.
  • Around Tuckton, the water has tidal influence and a mixed coarse-and-sea-fish feel. The catch gallery includes barbel, mullet and other lower-river fish.
  • Named coarse species include barbel, bream, chub, carp, roach, perch, eels and pike. Trout and salmon are also available in season.
  • The coarse fishing season runs from 16 June to 14 March. That gives you plenty of scope for proper summer trotting, feeder work and winter swims when there’s a bit of colour.
  • Day tickets allow two rods for a full day, so you can set up a feeder rod and still keep another line working. Bob on for covering different water.
  • Fishing times are sunrise to two hours after sunset unless you hold the relevant night permit. No sneaking onto the river bank outside those permitted times.
  • Access points include the Bowls Club on Barrack Road, Old Bridge Road, Iford Road, Iford Recreation Ground on Iford Lane and Meridians off Stour Road at Tuckton. Permission is requested at the Bowls Club.
  • A club key is needed for access. Dogs are allowed on leads, but bivvies are not permitted, and you can’t stay longer than 24 hours in the same swim.
  • Members may fish from a boat, though trolling is banned. No boats or canoes are allowed above Iford Bridge, while boat fishing below Tuckton Bridge needs the relevant permit.

Methods: For the coarse water, cover the crease and steadier glides with trotting or a feeder, switching between swims as conditions change. A second rod can help you fish two lines, while the lower tidal-influenced water suits anglers happy to mix coarse tactics with a bit of sea-fish variety.
