We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The fishable water is around Longham Waterworks, immediately before Longham Bridge when travelling from Ferndown along Ringwood Road.
- It’s a proper mixed bit of river, with weir pools, deeper runs and swims that suit different styles of angling.
- The older RDAA book describes roughly three-quarters of a mile of Dorset Stour, plus a series of weir pools.
- There’s meant to be a good chance of specimen fish, with WDAC naming chub over 7lb, barbel over 14lb, roach over 2lb, pike over 20lb, perch over 2lb and bream over 5lb.
- WDAC’s sound advice is to walk the stretch first and locate the shoals. Travel light, keep mobile and don’t faff about carrying a whole tackle shop.
- The deeper runs and weir areas should give you plenty to look at, whether you fancy trotting, feeder work or targeting bigger fish. Pick the swim around the conditions.
- The coarse season runs from 16 June to 14 March. Night fishing isn’t allowed, and guest tickets aren’t available.
- Livestock may be in the fields, so give them room. WDAC also asks anglers to report any cormorant sightings.
- There are no toilets, but designated parking is available. Use the main car park and access through the waterworks gates with the swipe card collected from Wessex Angling.
Methods: A mobile approach looks bob on here: walk the stretch, find the fish and then settle over the crease, deep runs or weir pools. Trotting and feeder fishing fit the mixed swims, while the bigger named fish call for a more targeted setup.
