Throop Beat 1
Throop Beat 1 is the upper stretch of the Throop fishery, running from the top boundary down to New Weir on the River Stour. It’s a proper mixed coarse stretch, with willows, gravel shallows, deep holes and long glides to keep you busy.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- Beat 1 is the Hurn section at Throop, and it joins the club’s Bounds Farm fishery on the north bank. It also takes in the lower end of the Muscliffe free stretch.
- The boundary runs from the top boundary to New Weir. Across its three beats, the club has over five miles of fishable bank, so there’s plenty of water to explore.
- The river has a cracking mix of overhanging willows, clear gravel shallows and deeper holes. Some sections were redirected away from Throop Mill after floods in the early 1980s.
- Expect long, deep glides alongside the shallower gravel. The deeper swims can produce big bream, while the varied margins offer plenty to pick apart.
- Summer can bring a fair bit of weed, and the club says finding a float swim can be difficult. It’s worth looking for cleaner water before setting up.
- There’s a good spread of named fish here: roach, chub, bream, pike, barbel, eels, dace and a few carp. A proper mixed bag sort of place.
- Coarse fishing runs from 16 June to 14 March. Trout and salmon fishing is allowed in season, but you’ll need a game fishing ticket for that.
- Normal fishing is from sunrise until two hours after sunset. If Beat 2’s permitted finish is later, that later time applies. Members can fish round the clock on Beat 1 with a night permit.
- A club key is needed for access. Use only the permitted parking areas, and take care around overhead powerlines — the club recommends staying at least 20 metres away from cables.
Methods: Trotting and feeder work both suit the mix of glides, gravel shallows and deeper holes. In summer, spend time searching out a fishable float swim through the weed, then target the crease, margins and deeper water.
