We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is tidal river fishing, so the big thing to keep in mind is changing water levels. BAA’s warning is clear: the river here can rise several feet rapidly.
  • Bream take top billing on the stretch’s fish list. If they’re your thing, that’s the headline here — rather than a promise of particular catches, sizes or a banker swim.
  • There’s more than bream on the list, with roach, pike and eels also named for Deerhurst & Apperley. Those are the fish BAA specifically highlights for this bit of river.
  • For the Deerhurst end, take the A38 south from Tewkesbury, then the B4213 and the Deerhurst turn. It’s a separate approach from Apperley, so get your chosen access point straight first.
  • BAA directs Deerhurst anglers to park near Odda’s Chapel. The parking what3words is recover.hence.tempting — a handy detail to have ready before you set off with all the kit.
  • For Apperley, head through the village and down Gabb Lane, then use the parking provided for Apperley Pools. The parking what3words is walnuts.wider.beakers, so don’t mix up the two ends.
  • Your BAA membership card carries the Apperley gate code. Have that handy rather than adding a bit of avoidable faff at the gate; membership is what provides access to this stretch.
  • Keep this one for daytime sessions: night fishing is prohibited. The published membership year runs from 1 January to 31 December 2026, with association rules and the appropriate Environment Agency licence applying.

Methods: Bream are the main species to build your session around, with roach, pike and eels also listed. Whatever your approach, keep that rapid-rise warning front and centre.

Key rules

  • Night fishing is prohibited.
  • Access is through BAA membership and is subject to association rules.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
