Royalty Fishery
The Royalty Fishery is a cracking, historic multi-species stretch on the Hampshire Avon at Christchurch, Dorset. South West Lakes Trust has managed it since April 2022, with around two miles of varied river to explore.

River level integration coming for this stretch.
My River Watch isn't available here — we haven't matched a level gauge to this stretch, and we won't guess one.
The lowdown
- This is proper classic Avon water, with weirs, pools, side channels and a mix of coarse and game-fishing character.
- There’s plenty of variety in the stretch, so expect changing pace and depth rather than the same swim all day. Find the crease, the slack water and any crease below the weirs.
- The Royalty has long-standing historical importance as a Christchurch fishery. It’s the sort of place where the water’s character does half the talking.
- Coarse fishing runs from 16 June to 13 March. The fishery is open all year apart from 25 December, but your permit dates and rules are the thing to follow.
- A standard 2026 coarse day ticket runs from 7:30am until fishery closing time. Closing times change through the year, so check the permit before setting off.
- There’s also a 2026 night ticket, running from 6:30pm to 7:30am. Handy if you fancy a proper evening session and the river’s on the munch.
- The named coarse species include chub, barbel, roach, bream and pike. A mixed bag is very much the order of the day here.
- Trotting or light feeder work should suit the varied coarse water, while the pools, weirs and side channels are the obvious places to study carefully.
- The main car park is on Avon Buildings, with toilets provided. The Mill Road anglers’ car park is currently closed. Dogs are welcome, too.
Methods: Trotting should be bob on in the steadier glides, while a feeder can cover deeper pools and slack edges. Pick apart the crease, side channels and weir pools rather than charging through the swim.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
