Wilsford Manor Estate Beat

Plan a session

A proper cracking upper Avon beat near Wilsford cum Lake, with roughly a mile of private estate water and some seriously chunky brown trout. It’s fly-only, day-ticket fishing, with a handy hut for when the Hampshire weather turns a bit cheeky.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Amesbury on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is a wide, varied stretch for the upper Avon, giving you plenty to get your teeth into rather than one uniform channel.
  • There’s around one mile of fishing in total: about 908 yards of double-bank water, plus roughly 270 yards of single-bank fishing.
  • Some pools are properly deep, thanks to the channel incorporating a former mill leat. Worth giving those deeper bits a good look.
  • The river is normally stocked, although that isn’t necessarily done every year. The brownies range from small wild fish right up to double-figure specimens.
  • The best reported brown trout from the beat has topped 17lb, so there’s genuine heavyweight potential here. Proper fish, not just dainty little snacks.
  • Mayfly is a big deal, with a prolific hatch often running from mid-May into July. That’s the obvious window for matching the hatch and keeping an eye on the surface.
  • Fishing is fly-fishing water, with the normal season running approximately from mid-April to the end of September. Published hours are about 9am to 7pm.
  • The estate has carried out bank-restoration work, and the beat generally takes two to four rods per day. That should keep things feeling spacious rather than shoulder-to-shoulder.
  • There’s a fishing hut with indoor and outdoor seating, shelter, heating, electricity, drinks and barbecue facilities. Toilets and changing facilities are in the adjoining hut, with parking on or near the fishery.

Methods: Fly fishing is the order of the day, with the mayfly hatch from mid-May into July the standout opportunity. Cover the varied channel and deeper former-mill-leat pools carefully, especially when the brownies are on the munch.
