We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The fishing runs through five named beats: Grove, Moorcourt, Longbridge, Lee Park, and Rookery & Lord Louis. Plenty to get your head around before picking a swim.
  • Longbridge is described as roughly one-third of a mile of double-bank main river. It also has a fishing hut and toilet facilities, which is always bob on.
  • This is classic chalkstream country. The estate describes the Test as famous for its part in the development of modern fly fishing.
  • The river and adjoining banks and meadows are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Treat it with care and keep the banks tidy.
  • Trout fishing is upstream dry fly and nymph only. Lures are a no-go for trout, and flies should be natural imitations.
  • Hooks must be no larger than size 10 for trout fishing. So, keep things neat and sensible rather than reaching for anything chunky.
  • The main beats provide trout and salmon fishing. The estate also names Atlantic salmon, sea trout, grayling, and native brown trout on its water.
  • Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk. Dogs can come along, but they need to stay under strict control, and owners must pick up after them.
  • Every fish caught, whether kept or released, must go in the fishing log at Longbridge Fishing Hut. A small faff, but essential.
  • Both day rods and season rods are offered. The estate also advertises fortnightly shared and exclusive season rods, plus a separate carrier-trout syndicate option.

Methods: For trout, stick to upstream dry fly or nymph with natural imitations and hooks no larger than size 10. Lures are prohibited for trout fishing; the available facts do not set out methods for the salmon fishing.
