Ginger Beer Beat, Kimbridge

Ginger Beer Beat is Orvis UK’s flagship River Test stretch at Kimbridge, with roughly a third of a mile of productive trout water. There’s a cracking mix of steady and quicker fishing, interesting shallows, a bubbling top pool and the famous Ginger Beer Pool, which can hold a proper lump of a trout.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Oxlease on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is middle-Test fishing between Romsey and Stockbridge, booked and run by Orvis UK through its Sporting Adventures operation.
  • The beat is approximately one third of a mile long, with a medium flow and a good mix of slower and faster water. Plenty to keep you busy.
  • Most of the fishing is from the bank, so you won’t need to faff about wading for almost all of the beat. Bob on for a tidy day out.
  • There are interesting shallows, a bubbling top pool and the famous Ginger Beer Pool. Orvis says that pool can hold a large trout, so it’s one to keep an eye on.
  • Wading is available from the footbridge upstream towards the weir pool. Through the centre it’s described as easy and not too deep.
  • Do not enter the top pool while wading. That’s a firm one to remember before you get carried away chasing a fish.
  • The main quarry is brown trout. Salmon and sea trout can turn up, but they must be returned. Grayling may be fished for during the winter months under the syndicate information.
  • The syndicate details permit upstream dry-fly and nymph fishing. The fishery is stocked, and the stated bag limit is two fish per rod before catch-and-release is expected.
  • It’s described as productive and extremely popular, so early booking is a smart move. Beginners and experienced anglers are both catered for with Orvis-guided or hosted options.
  • There’s parking on the beat via a private road and private car park. Exclusive-use bookings also include use of the equipped thatched fishing hut and its facilities.

Methods: Upstream dry-fly and nymph fishing are permitted under the syndicate details. Most of the beat fishes comfortably from the bank, with wading available around the footbridge and towards the weir pool.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
