Lower Mill, Longparish
Lower Mill at Longparish is one of the prettiest beats on the upper River Test. It’s a crystal-clear chalkstream run exclusively by Fly Odyssey Chalkstream, with main-river water, two little carriers and cracking sight-fishing for brown trout and grayling.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Whitchurch Main on Live River Levels

The lowdown
- This is predominantly a wading beat, but there are bank-fishing options too. The wading is neither deep nor overly fast, so it sounds pretty manageable rather than a proper battle with the flow.
- Both banks are accessible throughout the beat, giving you plenty of room to move and find the fish. Handy when one side is looking a bit quieter.
- The water mixes things up nicely, with deep pools, riffles and smooth glides. There are open, straightforward sections as well as tighter tree-lined bits.
- Those tighter sections are suited to experienced stalking. Keep things tidy, stay low and make that first cast count — crystal-clear water is brilliant, but it won’t hide much.
- The beat includes two small carriers alongside the main river. That gives the day a bit more variety and plenty of water to pick apart.
- Fly fishing is the name of the game, with both dry-fly and nymph approaches available. Upstream presentation is expected, so accuracy and a soft touch are bob on.
- There are stocked trout as well as wild brown trout, with brown trout and grayling the named species. Sight-fishing in clear water is a big part of the appeal.
- Fishing is available from 9:30am until dusk, during the listed season of 23 April to 15 December. The grayling-season rate applies from 8 October to 15 December.
- A rod room is provided for lunch, with china, cutlery, glasses, a fridge and kettle. Tea and coffee are supplied, spare waders are available, and picnic facilities are provided too.
- The beat is available for one or two anglers. Dogs are permitted under the published rules, and all fishing is catch and release.
Methods: Dry fly and nymph fishing, with upstream presentation expected. The clear water, pools, riffles and glides make careful sight-fishing the main attraction.
