We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The fishery has been operated since 2005 and is split into three handy sections: Garden, Side Stream and Upper.
- Garden and Side Stream sit downstream of the mill, while the Upper section is upstream. Nice bit of variety in one booking.
- Two sections are wading sections. The third gives you the choice of fishing either bank or getting in and wading.
- This is classic gin-clear chalk-stream stuff, so neat presentation matters. Keep things tidy and don’t go charging about.
- There’s abundant aquatic food and strong hatches, which sets things up nicely for fly fishing when the river is going mad with naturals.
- Restoration work with the Wild Trout Trust and Sparsholt College has added log deflectors and woody debris. Expect the river to have a few proper features to pick apart.
- The upper section has been fenced off from the footpath, giving that part of the beat a bit more separation.
- Fishing is for one or two rods. The May 13–June 4 period requires a minimum of two rods, so worth clocking before booking.
- A rod room in the stable block comes with kitchen and refreshment facilities. Parking is on the gravel area by the mill.
- Get in through the wooden gate at the end of The Weir. The fishing coordinates given are 51.222876, -1.341346.
Methods: Approach it as a proper chalk-stream job: careful wading where allowed, neat fly presentation through the clear water and a close eye on the hatches. The log deflectors, woody debris and section changes should give you plenty to work out.
