Cabalva Estate Fishery (Whitney-on-Wye)
Cabalva is a cracking, nearly two-mile private stretch of the Wye at Whitney-on-Wye. It’s unspoilt, properly varied water, with classic salmon pools, quick glides, rocky depth and some useful backwaters.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is private estate water, not a conventional day-ticket fishery. Fishing is for guests staying at Cabalva, arranged in advance. So, no turning up on the off-chance.
- The stretch runs for just under two miles and has no formal pegs. Expect natural banks, plenty of trees and a fishery that’s deliberately not manicured.
- The river changes character nicely. There are fast, shallow glides, deeper rocky pools and classic salmon water dotted along the stretch.
- The upper fishery sits at one of the Wye’s widest points. In flood conditions, calmer backwaters appear in parts of this upper section — handy areas when the main flow is pushing hard.
- Down by Mill Cottage there’s a classic salmon pool, plus a large backwater used by several species. That gives you more than one angle when the river’s being awkward.
- Much of the salmon-pool water is described as easy to wade. Still, access can be tricky in places and good mobility may be needed. It’s proper riverbank fishing, not a neat park-and-peg job.
- Fly fishing and spinning suit some of the salmon pools. The estate also lists coarse and mixed fish, including chub, barbel, dace, pike, grayling, Atlantic salmon and wild brown trout.
- There’s plenty of scope for watching the water first. Look for the crease, softer edges below the pools and slack water around the backwaters. Trotting or a light feeder should suit the quieter bits.
- Pike over 20lb have been caught here, and the estate says some grayling exceed 2lb. The water is traditionally game fishing as well as coarse fishing, so there’s a proper mix of options.
Methods: Fly fishing and spinning are suitable for some salmon pools. For the coarse water, trotting or a feeder into the glides, pool tails and backwaters looks the sensible way to start.
