We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- The stretch starts at permanent peg 1, where a shallow, fast riffle gets things moving. Below that, the river drops into a deeper, steadier run towards the city.
- This is the start of a well-known match-fishing section, so expect classic river swims rather than a wild, remote setting. Proper urban Wye fishing.
- Roach, dace, chublets and perch turn up regularly, with larger chub and barbel also present. There’s a decent spread of target fish here.
- The club also lists bream, brown trout, carp, eel, pike, salmon and grayling for the fishery. Specimen carp are reported to run beyond 30lb.
- A static approach is recommended if you’re looking to build a weight of fish. Maggot, caster, hemp, worm, meat and bread are all listed as productive baits.
- All Belmont fishing must be from the permanent pegs. Use any provided platforms, and don’t fish between pegs, around platforms or in front of them.
- The banks are steep and clay-based, and can get slippery when damp. A rope with a dog spike is recommended for safer access to the swims.
- It’s a fairly tidy setup, with level paths and parking beside the river. The small gravel area by the Pump House holds roughly 12 cars if everyone parks sensibly.
- Access is via the road to the Waterworks Museum off Broomy Hill. Don’t block access, and remember the parking area is beside the Pump House.
- Bring a suitable landing net, keep unattended rods out of the equation, and take two keepnets where appropriate. Maximum two rods on Association waters.
Methods: For a steady weight, keep it static and work the usual river baits — maggot, caster, hemp, worm, meat or bread. Fish the riffle and the deeper run from the proper pegs, with chub and barbel worth keeping in mind.
