We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is the Moccas Fishery, sitting between Hay-on-Wye and Hereford. Segment A is tied to the Bredwardine and Red Lion/Moccas holding.
- The barbel are the headline act. Typical fish run 4–9 lb, with plenty of double-figure fish reported and a stated maximum of 14 lb.
- There’s a decent coarse mix too. Chub over 5 lb, bream over 9 lb and carp up to 27 lb are all named, alongside dace, bleak, roach and pike.
- Expect varied river character rather than one uniform run. Fast gravel water gives way to deep pools, while slower glides run over red bedrock and underwater ledges.
- The dark holding pools are also used by salmon. The salmon beat is described as having pools, fly runs, easy access and good wading.
- Day-ticket anglers get roughly one mile of pegs. Hotel guests get access to four miles, while the wider hotel offering is approximately eight miles of River Wye fishing.
- Coarse fishing runs from 16 June to 14 March. All EA-permitted baits are allowed, so trotting, feeder work and fishing tight to the crease are all on the table.
- For salmon, fly and spinning are allowed until 31 August. From 1 September to 17 October it’s fly-only, with every salmon released.
- Watch the calendar on warm weekends and bank holidays. Canoe traffic can be heavy from 10am to 4pm, and the salmon beat operates a wash-off policy.
- Keep it tidy and bob on: use barbless or micro-barbed hooks, don’t put barbel or carp in keepnets, leave gates as found and don’t bring visitor dogs onto the fishery.
Methods: For coarse fishing, work the gravel runs, creases and deeper holding water with trotting or feeder tactics, adjusting to the flow. Salmon anglers have fly and spinning options until 31 August, then fly-only through to 17 October.
