We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is a proper varied bit of the Wye, with good wading fly water alongside deeper sections and pools. So there’s plenty to get your teeth into.
  • The fishery runs for about 0.75 miles, roughly 1.21 km. Fishing is available above and below Hoarwithy Bridge, with both single-bank and double-bank sections.
  • Coarse anglers have barbel, chub and dace named for the beat, with roach and perch also reported. A decent spread of Wye fish, then.
  • The coarse side is capped at five rods across the fishery at any one time. It’s one rod per angler, so the place should feel nicely uncrowded rather than peg-on-peg.
  • The deeper bits and pools look the sort of water to pick out with a feeder, while the shallower, fishable runs are suited to trotting when conditions allow.
  • Pike fishing is fly-only and runs from 1 October to 1 February. It’s limited to two anglers, so this is a small, focused winter session rather than a free-for-all.
  • Salmon fishing is aimed at experienced salmon anglers. The beat contains good wading fly water, with all salmon fishing needing to be booked through Old Harp Fishery.
  • The water has historically been very lightly fished, which is a proper draw. Expect a quieter feel and plenty of room to work through the swims.
  • Everything is by prior arrangement, so don’t just turn up and hope. Sort the booking first, pick your target species, then plan around the flow and available water.

Methods: For coarse fishing, try trotting the glides or working a feeder into the deeper sections and pools. Pike is fly-only in the stated winter period, while salmon fishing is for experienced anglers using the beat’s wading fly water.
