We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is proper Wye country, with the river pushing through a limestone gorge towards Monmouth. A cracking backdrop, and a stretch with plenty going on under the surface.
  • The water mixes gravel runs with deeper channels, so there’s a bit of everything to pick apart. Look for the crease where faster water meets the steadier stuff.
  • Martin’s Pool sits near the lower limit. It’s a notably deep section, reputed to hold large carp and pike, so it’s the obvious big-fish feature.
  • The stretch runs for approximately 2.5 miles, giving you plenty of water to explore rather than just a handful of pegs. Vehicle access is available along the entire left bank.
  • There’s also a footbridge around halfway along the fishery. Handy for getting your bearings and moving between sections.
  • For coarse fishing, the season runs from June 16 to March 14. Trotting the gravelly water or fishing a feeder into the deeper channels both fit the character of the place.
  • The salmon season runs from March 3 to October 17. A small salmon syndicate fishes weekdays from March 3 to June 16, while salmon day tickets go through The Fishing Passport.
  • Coarse fishing is by limited membership or limited day-ticket enquiry. Day tickets cost £25.00 and must be booked in advance — no turning up on the bank and having a cheeky fish.
  • Pike fishing is restricted to pre-registered Winter Dream Ticket members. The holder also mentions carp and pike at Martin’s Pool, with the rest described as the usual Wye coarse species.

Methods: For coarse anglers, work the gravel runs with a float or feeder and switch to the deeper channels and Martin’s Pool when you fancy a bigger-fish approach. Salmon anglers have the March-to-October season, with weekday syndicate access in the early part of the season.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
