Tresseck Campsite

A cracking 300m stretch of the River Wye at Tresseck Campsite, Hoarwithy, with fishing along the campsite bank. It’s a permission-only setup, and permits must be bought before you wet a line.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The stretch runs below Hoarwithy church, beside a big riverside meadow in a lovely rural Wye Valley setting between Hereford and Ross-on-Wye.
  • There’s a sheltered riverside landing area and a pebble beach, giving the place a relaxed campsite feel rather than a formal block of numbered pegs.
  • Access to the river is via the canoe-launch steps only. That’s the route in and out, so don’t go wandering along the banks looking for another way down.
  • The water is shared with canoe launching, kayaking and wild swimming. Keep your eyes open and give other river users plenty of room, especially around the landing area.
  • Fishing is restricted to the campsite curtilage. The opposite bank is private property and must not be climbed onto — nice and straightforward.
  • The holder describes 300m of fishing rights, but doesn’t publish a peg count or a detailed swim map. Expect a natural riverside setup rather than rows of manicured pegs.
  • A landing net is required. Bring all your own tackle too, as the campsite doesn’t provide fishing equipment.
  • It’s a spot for keeping things tidy and low-key: no unattended tackle on the bank, no fires or barbecues on the bank or beach, and every scrap of litter comes home with you.
  • The published fishing price is £15 per rod per day for campers. Multiple-day arrangements need sorting directly with the campsite, and fishing is seasonal alongside the campsite’s operating dates.
  • The site is open seasonally. Its FAQ says April 1 to September 30, while the homepage gives a 2027 reopening date of March 26, so check the current position before making plans.

Methods: The holder doesn’t publish detailed swim or fish information, so keep the approach adaptable to the river conditions and other water users. Bring a suitable landing net and all your own tackle.

Key rules

  • Anglers must have the owner's permission and purchase a fishing permit before fishing.
  • Fishing is restricted to the campsite curtilage.
  • River access is via the canoe-launch steps only.
  • Landing nets are required.
  • Tackle must not be left unattended on the bank.
  • Fires and barbecues are prohibited on the bank and beach.
  • All litter must be removed.
  • The opposite riverbank is private property and must not be climbed onto.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
