We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is proper varied Wye water. The stretch has a wide range of depths and features, so there should be plenty to get your teeth into rather than one uniform run.
- The fast, weedy gravel runs are the lively bits. They look suited to working the flow, finding the crease and keeping a bait moving through the swim.
- Then you have deep, slow glides for a completely different game. These calmer sections give you somewhere to slow things down and search the deeper water.
- It’s a few miles upstream of Ross-on-Wye, near Foy, and is described as middle/lower Wye fishing. A handy bit of river with a proper mix of pace and depth.
- The venue is just over one mile long, giving you a fair chunk of water to explore. The varied character should help spread anglers out across the beat.
- The holder lists the usual Wye coarse species, with pike, chub, barbel and carp specifically named for the venue. The page also mentions specimen fish and good match bags.
- Specimen pike, chub and barbel are all highlighted. That gives the stretch a bit of extra clout, whether you fancy a predator session or getting among the coarse fish.
- Coarse fishing runs from June 16 to March 14. Salmon fishing is available by enquiry, so that needs sorting separately before making plans.
- Vehicle access is available along the entire length of the fishery, which should make shifting kit less of a faff. Access is by prior arrangement only, though, so don’t just turn up.
- The cottage is another option, with holiday-cottage enquiries directed to the owners. A tidy base for a few days on this varied bit of Wye water.
Methods: The fast gravel runs should suit active approaches, while the deep, slow glides give you room to work a feeder or settle into a patient swim. Pike, chub, barbel and carp are the named targets, with the stretch also noted for specimen fish and good match bags.
