We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • This is predominantly gravel-bottomed Wye, so wading is easier than on the bedrock sections above Hay. Still, take care in the flow and pick your water sensibly.
  • The fishery is mostly double-bank and divided into six sections. Contact the fishery keeper before fishing for the latest beat-location information.
  • There’s enough water for fly anglers, plus some spinning during the permitted salmon period. Salmon fishing is catch-and-release throughout.
  • Salmon permits spinner and fly methods from 3 March to 31 August. From 1 September to 17 October, it switches to fly-only.
  • Trout and grayling fishing is fly-only. Spinning isn’t allowed for trout or coarse fishing, so leave the lure gear for the permitted salmon window.
  • The coarse options include barbel, chub and pike. Expect gravel-bottomed river water and the usual Wye mix of flowing swims and fish-holding creases.
  • Canoe traffic can be heavy from around 10am to 4pm at weekends in warmer months, especially on bank holidays. An early start should mean less faff.
  • Vehicular access to the bankside is available at several points. Commercial vehicles and campervan-style vehicles aren’t allowed on the estate grounds; use roadside lay-bys instead.
  • Dogs are welcome but must be kept under control. The beat also operates a wash-off policy, so factor that into your kit and end-of-day routine.

Methods: Fly fishing is the main game for trout and grayling, with fly or permitted spinning for salmon depending on the date. Coarse anglers can target barbel, chub and pike, following the booking-system regulations and national byelaws.
