We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is LDAA water, and the association has been managing fishing for over 100 years. It controls roughly five miles of the Lune.
- The surrounding Claughton section is rural and pastoral, with the flood-prone Lune valley and floodplain giving the place a wild, open feel.
- The nearby mapped location is beside Claughton Beck and the Lune floodplain. Geograph photographs show the river and floodplain between Claughton and Aughton.
- The named quarry is salmon, sea trout and brown trout. That makes this a proper migratory-fish stretch rather than a general coarse-water job.
- Salmon are in season from 1 February to 31 October. Migratory trout run from 1 April to 30 September, while non-migratory brown trout run from 15 March to 30 September.
- Visiting anglers can book online day tickets through LDAA. They run from 08:00 to 22:00 on the purchase date, but only on weekdays.
- Spinning and worm fishing are allowed only when the Caton gauge is above 1 ft 6 in. Keep an eye on the gauge before setting off, rather than having a wasted trip.
- If worm fishing for salmon, circle hooks are required. Prawn and shrimp fishing are a straight no-go, and every angler needs an effective unhooking device.
- All salmon caught by day-ticket anglers must be released carefully. Handle them properly and get them back quickly.
- The valley is flood-prone, so conditions can change. A bit of extra water may affect what methods are permitted, especially if the Caton gauge is below the stated level.
Methods: Spinning and worm fishing are permitted when the Caton gauge exceeds 1 ft 6 in. Salmon worm fishing needs circle hooks; prawn and shrimp fishing are prohibited.
