River Welland at Ketton
A proper little wild-trout gem at Ketton, run by GAAFFS as dedicated fly-fishing water. Natural, unspoilt and generally uncrowded, with brown trout doing their thing and the odd cheeky chub showing on the fly.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is the River Welland west of Stamford, with GAAFFS holding the fishing rights. The Ketton reach is dedicated fly water, not a general coarse-fishing stretch.
- The river is bigger than the nearby River Chater, which joins the Welland within the managed area. That gives the water a bit more presence and a wider mix of river character.
- Expect varied habitat and attractive countryside rather than a trimmed, built-up fishery. It’s described as natural, unspoilt and tranquil — bob on if you fancy a quieter session.
- The main quarry is wild brown trout. They’re present naturally, with only sparse brown-trout stocking across GAAFFS waters. The emphasis is firmly on wild fish.
- Chub are also caught on the fly, so don’t switch off when you’re working the deeper or steadier bits. A bigger shape moving in the flow could be worth a cheeky cast.
- It’s intended for fly angling, including modern approaches such as tenkara and euro nymphing. Pick the method that suits the water in front of you rather than forcing it.
- The trout season runs from 1 April to 29 October. Grayling fishing may continue to February, but the general GAA rule prohibits fishing GAAFFS waters from 1 November to 31 March.
- GAAFFS describes its fishing as uncrowded and tranquil. That makes it a cracking option for concentrating on presentation, reading the flow and enjoying a proper river day.
- Access is not a simple turn-up-and-fish job. It’s members-only water, with any guest opportunity needing to be properly arranged before you travel.
- Exact access and parking arrangements need confirming with GAAFFS. The practical village and postcode reference is Ketton, PE9 3RS, but don’t assume that tells you where to park or start fishing.
- We're not sure on ticket prices for this one — check with the club or local regulations before you leave.
Methods: Fly fishing is the intended approach, with tenkara and euro nymphing specifically welcomed alongside conventional fly methods. Work the varied habitat carefully, keeping things tidy and natural for the wild trout.
