We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is classic historic match-fishing water, with the river running through and around Spalding. The nearest principal settlement is Spalding, so it’s a handy bit of fenland river for a day on the bank.
- The described section runs from Four Mile Bar downstream to Spalding Yacht Club. Official access references include Four Mile Bar Bridge, PE11 3DY, and upstream of Welland Yacht Club, PE11 3AA.
- Expect a heavily weeded river in places. It can be a bit of a faff, but that weed is part of the character and the stretch can still produce good catches if you’re prepared to put the time in.
- Large shoals of bream are present, making this a tempting venue when they’re on the munch. Roach are present in large shoals too, so there’s plenty of scope for a busy session when conditions line up.
- Raking is recommended by the association. Clear yourself a sensible swim rather than trying to tackle the whole river, then give it time to settle before fishing it properly.
- Prebaiting is also recommended to improve sport. That should be especially useful when targeting the shoals, whether you’re planning a float session or settling in with a feeder.
- The water is primarily known for roach and bream fishing. Look for workable gaps in the weed and pay attention to the crease, any steadier glides and areas where the flow eases.
- This is a shared-use setting, with public access points and some banks or paths shared with other users. Expect a bit of movement around the venue and keep tackle, bankside gear and dogs well managed.
- Night fishing is permitted on this River Welland venue, and standard P&DAA membership includes night fishing on Welland venues. River fishing is closed from 15 March through 15 June inclusive.
Methods: Float fishing for roach and feeder work for bream are the obvious approaches. Rake and prebait first where needed, then fish the clearer gaps and steadier water.
