We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a proper varied bit of river, with fast shallows rubbing shoulders with deeper water down to about 8 feet.
- The lower limit sits behind the Sloop Inn at Llandogo. Upstream, the stretch starts at two fields above Wyeseal Farm.
- The section below Bigsweir Bridge is included, with parking available in the Old Station area. There’s also parking beside the track to Wyeseal Farm.
- Tump Farm is another parking option, although there’s a small charge. Stick to the indicated parking areas and don’t block tracks.
- It’s a tidal section, so water levels can have a good old wobble. Keep an eye on conditions and expect the swims to change character.
- Float and feeder work are the usual approaches. There’s enough variation here to have a go at trotting the shallower water or putting a feeder into the deeper runs.
- Barbel and chub are named targets, with dace and pike also listed among the fish present. A bit of colour and a steady push could be well worth finding.
- The fishing season is 18 October to 2 March, and the same restriction applies at Tump Farm. Lower Bigsweir is not available for night fishing.
- Give salmon anglers plenty of room — river anglers must leave at least 10 metres between anglers and give way to salmon fishing.
- Close every gate, take your litter home and display your membership card on the dashboard, with identification left in the car windscreen.
Methods: Float and feeder tactics are the usual game here. Try trotting the faster shallows or feeding a line into one of the deeper, steadier swims.
