We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is the tidal River Great Ouse, downstream of Denver Sluice, so expect a proper fenland river rather than a tiny, intimate stream.
- The water is broad and open, with raised banks and countryside all around. It’s the sort of place where the wind can have a cheeky say in things.
- Downham Bridge is the main landmark, with the stretch linked to the riverbanks west of Downham Market. Geograph records a public bridleway along either bank.
- There’s no published peg count, so don’t turn up expecting numbered swims. Pick your spot sensibly and keep public rights of way clear.
- The Downham Market access is separate from KLAA’s excluded Relief Channel venue. Make sure you’re fishing the right bit before setting up.
- With that tidal flow, trotting and feeder work are the obvious starting points. Look for steadier water, the crease and any slack along the margins.
- A broad river like this can be bang on for bream and roach, while perch and pike give you something meatier to look for. KLAA also lists carp, tench and zander across its fisheries.
- There’s no confirmed fishable length, dedicated car-park postcode or night-fishing permission published for this access. Check the parking and access details with KLAA or the bailiff before fishing.
- The banks are reached on foot via public rights of way, so travel light where possible. No fires, camping or barbecues — keep it tidy and leave the path usable.
- Day tickets are available from KLAA bailiffs on the bank, or you can fish on a seasonal river permit. A valid Environment Agency rod licence is required.
Methods: Start with a float or feeder approach, adapting to the tidal pull and looking for the crease, steadier glides and marginal slack water. Pike and perch offer a change of gear when the silver-fish action goes quiet.
