Nappa
Nappa is a cracking 1.5-mile, single-bank beat on the River Ribble between Gisburn and Long Preston, run by Ribblesdale Angling Association. It’s proper wild game-fishing water, with small pools and recognised salmon, sea-trout, brown-trout and grayling fishing.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is a long, single-bank stretch, so there’s plenty of water to explore without feeling boxed in. The exact bank isn’t specified, though.
- Small pools give the beat its character, with wild game-fish habitat running through the water. A few cheeky pockets could be well worth a look when the river has a bit of colour.
- The association reckons Nappa is among the best wild brown trout and grayling fishing on the river. That’s the main attraction here.
- It’s primarily a fly-fishing club, and the beat is geared towards salmon, sea trout, brown trout and grayling rather than general coarse fishing.
- Methods vary with river conditions and the beat. Keep it flexible: fly-fishing is the club’s main game, but the river will tell you whether to search the pools or cover the faster water.
- Very little deep wading is required, which is handy. You can fish the water without making a full expedition of every swim.
- The Ribble’s salmon season is generally 1 February to 31 October, while sea trout are generally in season from 1 April to 30 September under the applicable regional rules.
- Coarse fishing isn’t a free-for-all here. It’s only allowed on specific beats and at specific times under the club’s requirements, so check before bringing feeder gear.
- Access to the association beats is described as easy, and car parking is reasonably secure across its fishing. The club also provides river maps, plus river-height information and webcams for members.
Methods: This is mainly fly water, with tactics changing according to river height, colour and the individual beat. Fish the small pools and wild game-fish habitat sensibly, adapting your approach as conditions shift.
