North of Settle & Rathmell Deeps Beats
A proper rural Ribble stretch run by Settle Anglers Association, with the Rathmell Deeps section lying downstream of Settle and fishing extending to just above Rathmell Beck. Chub and grayling are the main named residents here, with the odd barbel turning up too.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready
The lowdown
- This is natural, meandering Ribble country, with floodplain and pasture giving the stretch a quiet rural feel.
- The association describes the water downstream of Settle as Rathmell Deeps. Its main Ribble fishing runs down to just above Rathmell Beck.
- The wider Settle Anglers Ribble preserves run from Stainforth Packhorse Bridge to just above Rathmell Beck — around 7 miles in total.
- There’s a separate approximately 1.5-mile association stretch at Arnford near Long Preston, so make sure you’re heading for the right bit of water.
- Chub and grayling are named for Rathmell Deeps, while occasional barbel are reported. A cheeky barbel would certainly brighten the day.
- The wider Ribble around Settle also holds brown trout, sea trout, grayling and salmon, although the specific Deeps listing names chub, grayling and barbel.
- This is wild river fishing rather than a stocked setup. The association follows a wild-trout policy, with riverine habitat improvement part of its management approach.
- Membership is required, and anglers need to carry both their current Environment Agency rod licence and proof of association membership.
- Use recognised access routes, keep a sensible distance from other anglers, and display membership and vehicle identification when parking off the public highway.
- Dogs aren’t wanted on the river waters. Don’t damage gates or fences, take litter home, and remember that fish must not be sold.
Methods: A natural, meandering river calls for a mobile approach and careful watercraft. Read the flow and changing river conditions, and keep your presentation suited to the swim in front of you.
