Far Fairholme, River Swale

Plan a session

Far Fairholme is the lower Northallerton-side length of the River Swale, running for roughly 1.5 miles below Morton-on-Swale road bridge. It’s a proper coarse-fishing stretch for match and pleasure anglers, with chub, barbel and pike the headline fish.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Maunby on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • This is the downstream Northallerton-side water, starting at the top of the Bailey Bridge field and finishing where How Beck joins the Swale.
  • Access is via Potter Lane, right to the end. A handy one to keep in mind when you’re lugging a bit of kit rather than fancying a long faff.
  • Parking is on the grassed area opposite Far Fairholme Farm. Keep it tidy and be mindful that this is farm country.
  • The club controls more than four miles of River Swale fishing altogether, with Far Fairholme making up about 1.5 miles of that total.
  • The club describes the Swale water as suitable for both match and pleasure anglers, so it’s not just a one-trick specimen venue.
  • Chub, barbel and pike are the main attraction. The club reports notable fish of all three being caught each season.
  • For chub, the far-bank cover on the downstream waters gets a specific mention. That’s the sort of feature worth concentrating on rather than spreading yourself too thin.
  • The surrounding water is described as a lowland Swale coarse-fishing stretch, with cover, fields and farm access around Morton-on-Swale.
  • There’s a bit of match pedigree here too: the club’s River Swale match record went over 145 lb in a five-hour match in 2008.
  • No official peg count, bank arrangement or night-fishing policy is published for Far Fairholme, so sort those details with the club before setting up.

Methods: The club lists the water for match and pleasure fishing, with chub, barbel and pike as the key targets. For chub, work the far-bank cover on the downstream water; beyond that, the club does not publish detailed Far Fairholme method guidance.
