Great Langton
Great Langton is a cracking 2 km (1.2 mile) River Swale beat run by Richmond & District Angling Society (RADAS). It offers both coarse and fly fishing, with a proper mix of riffles, glides, pools and slacks to keep things interesting.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Catterick Bridge on Live River Levels
The lowdown
- The beat is made up of pegs 1–15, marked GL on the club beat map. Plenty to get your teeth into, whether you fancy a short wander or settling into one swim.
- The north bank is fished upstream from the road bridge for about 90 metres. The south bank continues upstream from the bridge to the top-limit sign, marked by an old railway carriage.
- Peg 1 is a high-bank number with a fast riffle and deep water close in. That sounds like a handy spot when the river has a bit of colour or extra push.
- The water is nicely varied, with riffles, steady glides, deep pools, slacks and changing current structure. Good scope for working out where the fish are sitting on the day.
- This is a mixed coarse and fly-fishing beat. The club names barbel, chub and dace, alongside grayling and trout, so there’s a fair bit of choice in how you tackle it.
- For coarse anglers, the varied flow gives you options to fish the crease, trot the glides or work a feeder into deeper water. Fly anglers can look to the riffles, glides and smoother slacks.
- Several pegs have steep or slippery banks, especially when it’s wet. Take care getting in and out of swims — no need for a comedy swim before the fishing starts.
- Parking is in the lay-by on the north side of Langton Bridge. Don’t park on the south side. RADAS members are asked to use the upstream side of the lay-by.
- There’s a major Japanese knotweed infestation on the beat. Clean boots, clothing and kit before leaving, so the cheeky stuff isn’t spread elsewhere.
Methods: A flexible beat for trotting, feeder work and fishing the crease, with fly fishing also available across the riffles, glides and slacks. Match the approach to the flow and the depth in front of each peg.
