Ripon Piscatorial Association River Ure – Streams and Deep Water Sections

Ripon Piscatorial Association looks after roughly 9 miles of the River Ure, from Hutton Beck and North Bridge down towards Bishop Monkton. There’s a proper mix here: lively streams, deeper water, plenty of room for trotting, feeder work and a cheeky bit of ledgering.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open River Ready

The lowdown

  • The streams section runs from Hutton Beck and North Bridge to about a mile below Hewick Bridge. Expect more pace and classic running-water fishing.
  • The deep-water section makes up the other half of the club’s Ure water. It starts around the field above the Ripon Canal–Ure junction and carries on to peg 192 at Bishop Monkton.
  • For the streams, stick-float, waggler, feeder and ledger tactics are all listed as suitable. So there’s plenty to have a faff about with depending on the flow and colour.
  • The named fish list is a tidy one: roach, dace, grayling, perch, chub, barbel, pike, brown trout and salmon.
  • There’s some proper size in the mix too. Chub are reported to around 7 lb, barbel to about 15 lb and pike to roughly 20 lb. Brown trout are around 3 lb.
  • Salmon frequently run through the water, according to the association. Always a nice bonus when you’re watching the crease and a silver fish ghosts through.
  • Fishing is limited to two rods during daylight hours. The association says no night fishing is allowed on the River Ure, so pack up before dark.
  • The season rules are important. No fishing from 15 to 24 March inclusive. From 25 March to 15 June inclusive, only artificial fly, worm and minnow are allowed.
  • Access varies by section. Lower streams parking is next to the racecourse entrance by Hewick Bridge; upper streams parking is at Ure Bank Pond car park or via the field gate and track near peg 1.
  • Mid-section parking is at the end of the Ripon sewage works track. Parts of the deep water can be reached through Littlethorpe chicken farm or near the old army camp by Bishop Monkton, subject to the club’s arrangements.

Methods: On the streams, a stick-float or waggler is the obvious starting point, with feeder and ledger tactics also listed as suitable. Keep an eye on the pace, depth and crease, then switch things up if the fish aren’t on the munch.
