Earls Barton Mill

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Cogenhoe on Live River Levels
The lowdown
- Access is via Mill Lane from Earls Barton village. It’s an unsurfaced farm track, so expect a bit of farm-track faff rather than a smooth drive.
- Pedestrian access is over the footbridge by the mill house. Parking beside the mill house is very limited, so don’t bank on finding loads of room.
- The left bank of the navigation channel is included either side of the lock. That gives you proper river water to pick apart, with the lock adding a useful feature.
- The backwater is well covered too. Fish the right bank upstream and downstream of the mill-race, plus the left bank upstream and a short section downstream.
- Both banks of the small stream crossing the island are included. That’s a cracking bit of extra water to explore, especially when the bigger channel feels a touch awkward.
- With navigation channel, backwater, mill-race and stream all in play, there’s plenty of water to vary your approach. Look for the crease, steadier glides and any slack around the structures.
- The club lists bream, carp, chub, perch, pike and roach here. There’s enough variety for float work, feeder fishing and a few predator-minded sessions.
- Day-ticket fishing runs from dawn until dusk. The closed season applies from 15 March to 15 June inclusive, so plan sessions outside those dates.
- Night fishing is restricted to full club members where permitted. Day-ticket anglers cannot fish at night, and a valid Environment Agency rod licence may be requested.
Methods: A flexible venue for float and feeder work, with the lock, mill-race, backwater edges and island stream giving you plenty of lines to try. Predator anglers have pike and perch on the club list too.
