River Nene, Lower Nassington

Plan a session

Lower Nassington is an extended, members-only River Nene stretch run by Nene Anglers. Proper mixed fishing too, with big shoals of bream, healthy roach and a cracking reputation for barbel — especially around the cow-field area.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Wansford on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • The water starts just upstream of the footbridge below Elton red bridge and runs down to the brick footbridge at Nassington.
  • Depths vary from roughly 6 feet to more than 12 feet, so there’s plenty to go at — from shallower areas to proper deep-water swims.
  • Substantial shoals of bream are the main draw, with healthy numbers of roach mixed in. Ideal territory for match and pleasure anglers.
  • Barbel are a key feature here. The cow-field area is noted for larger fish, so specialist anglers have a proper target zone.
  • Chub, tench and perch are also present, giving you a few cheeky options when the main quarry isn’t on the munch.
  • Pike and established carp patrol the stretch as well. A minimum 30-inch landing net is required for specimen and predator fishing.
  • Fishing is only allowed from the banks shown on the club maps. No boats, inflatables, SUPs or other watercraft — keep it bank-side.
  • There are two designated parking areas: the main car park is halfway down the access track past the main gate on Elton Road, while the other is by the railway line.
  • Make sure the access gate and chains are secured properly after entry. Dogs aren’t allowed at Nene Anglers venues, and the banks and water can be dangerous.
  • Fishing times are 03:00-23:00 from June to September and 04:00-21:00 from October to March. The close season runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive.

Methods: For bream and roach, match or pleasure approaches suit the mixed depths. Barbel and the bigger carp call for a more specialist set-up, with the deeper water and cow-field area worth attention.
