Clara Vale River Tyne Beat

Plan a session

Clara Vale is a south-bank-only Tyne beat between Newburn and Ryton, run by Northumbrian Anglers Federation. It sits in a cracking bit of river with salmon, sea-trout, brown trout and coarse fishing available across the Federation’s Tyne waters.

We don't publish an "ideal level" — nobody can promise one. Flood water is dangerous: if it's up and coloured, stay well back from the edge. Open Bywell on Live River Levels

The lowdown

  • The fishery is split into two mapped sections: Points A–B and Points C–D. Both are south-bank fishing only, so keep that firmly in mind before setting off.
  • Fishing is prohibited between Point B and Point C. Federation stop signs mark the access points and boundaries, so they’re the things to follow on the ground.
  • The Tyne is described by the Federation as an excellent salmon and sea-trout river. Migratory fish can be targeted with fly or lure, subject to the rules and seasonal restrictions.
  • Brown-trout fishing is fly-only at all times under the 2026 rules. No bait faff here — bring the fly gear and fish within the current regulations.
  • Coarse anglers have plenty to look for in the wider Tyne waters, including dace, roach, chub, perch, pike and gudgeon. Dace are especially characteristic of the River Tyne.
  • River height matters. Kielder releases affect water levels and wading conditions, so check the river before travelling and be sensible if it’s carrying extra push or colour.
  • The wider Federation Tyne waters are described as approximately two miles long, with some double-bank fishing. That overview isn’t a precise length for the Clara Vale beat itself.
  • Clara Vale Nature Reserve, Tyne Riverside Country Park and Ryton Golf Club are all near the river. Access must be by recognised routes, with no trespassing.
  • You’ll need an appropriate landing net and should use it whenever possible. Parking in a recognised Federation area also requires a current Federation parking card on display.

Methods: Fly fishing is required for brown trout. Migratory fish may be fished with fly or lure, while coarse fishing needs the additional coarse permit during its applicable season. Check levels before thinking about wading.

Key rules

  • Fishing is south-bank only from Point A to Point B and from Point C to Point D.

  • Brown-trout fishing is fly-only at all times under the 2026 rules.
  • Migratory fish may be taken by fly or lure, subject to Federation rules and seasonal restrictions.
  • Live or dead bait is prohibited for migratory fish and brown trout.

Coarse fishing on English rivers is closed from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. That's the law for coarse fish on rivers — it's not a club rule, and game-fishing seasons work differently.
